- Her father Ramón worked in various jobs, including bank manager, teacher, school principal and deputy mayor of a town. Her mother worked in the human resources section of the Ministry of Education. Ana has one older brother, Javier, who is a photographer in New York. Ana grew up with food rationing, fuel shortages and electricity blackouts. As a teenager there was no internet access and limited knowledge of culture beyond Cuba. She was allowed to watch 20 minutes of cartoons on Saturday and the Sunday movie matinee. Her family had no video or DVD player, so she watched Hollywood movies at her neighbor's apartment. She would memorize and practice monologues in front of a mirror. She decided she want to be an actress at age 12.
At age of 14 she studied at the National Theatre School of Havana for four years.
At age 18, Ana obtained a Spanish citizenship through her maternal grandparents and moved to Madrid. In two weeks she met casting director Luis San Narcisco.
Ana acted in her first film Una Rosa de Francia in 2006.
Ana continued her film career in Spain and started appearing on television.
2014 – Ana moves to Los Angeles speaking very little English, so she had to start from scratch with auditions.
2015 – Ana starred opposite Keanu Reeves in Knock Knock.
2016 – Ana appears in film War Dogs, as well as Hands of Stone.
2017 – Ana is cast in Blade Runner 2049.
2019 – For her performance as Marta Cabrera in the mystery film Knives Out, Ana was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. This afforded opportunity for more top parts.
2021 – Ana played Bond girl Paloma in No Time to Die. Daniel Craig also acted with her in Knives Out. Ana portrays a Cuban CIA agent.
2022 – Ana starred in the thriller Deep Water. Her co-star was Ben Affleck. In September of 2022, Ana will portray Marilyn Monroe in the Netflix production, Blonde. A challenging role for her because of her Spanish accent. In preparation, Ana worked with a dialect coach for one year. Ana will also star in The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.
PERSONAL INFORMATION & TRIVIA
- Ana de Armas began a relationship with Spanish actor Marc Clotet in 2010 and they married in Costa Brava in July 2011. Before that she briefly dated Ben Affleck.
Ana has a dual citizenship – Cuba and Spain.
Ana is the second Latina actress to play a Bond girl.
In 2011 she auditioned for the role of Catwoman in The Batman.
