Today is Friday, 13th of September - a day that has been considered bad luck for a very long time.
Do you know why?
It is also when the Harvest Moon rises for most of the United States.
Some people believe the number 13 in itself is bad luck because Judas, a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth, was the 13th disciple.
Some historians believe the number 13th was considered unlucky as far back as when the Code of Hammurabi was created. It originally was to be 13 rules in the code, but someone omitted it to make it 12.
But a long time ago, a horrible injustice occurred on a Friday the 13th. It involved the Knights of the Order of Templar who fought bravely during the Crusades and was a unit dedicated to the Pope.
The Knights Templar ["Templier"] was created around 1188 as a monastic military order that protected pilgrims to the Holy Land after the Christians captured the Holy City of Jerusalem.
I think one of the best films made depicting that era was Kingdom of Heaven, superbly written and great acting. Directed and produced by the talented Ridley Scott [director of Gladiator] with a phenomenal cast: Liam Neeson [Excalibur, The Bounty, Dead Pool, Darkman, Schindler's List, Rob Roy, Les Misérables, Star Wars: Phantom Menace, The Haunting, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Gangs of New York, Batman Begins, Taken, Clash of the Titans, The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, Dark Knight Rises, The Commuter], Orlando Bloom [Blackhawk Down, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hobbit, The Outpost] , Nathalie Cox, Kevin McKidd [HBO's Rome], Martin Csokas, and Alexander Siddig to mention a few. But I digress .....
The founder of the Knights Templar was a French knight, Hugues de Payens. The original name of the order was Poor Knights of the Temple of King Solomon. In 1129, the Knights Templar received endorsement by the Catholic Church and donations as well as recruits began to pour in. Their fierceness in fighting soon became well known and established a series of banks that also provided them with economic power.
In the late 12th century, Muslims retook Jerusalem and the Knights Templar relocated to Paris. In 1139 Pope Innocent II issued a "bull" that granted the order special privileges: the Templars were allowed to build their own oratories and were not required to pay the tithe; they were also exempt from episcopal jurisdiction, being answerable only to the Pope. The rule of the order was modeled after the Benedictine Order. Two classes existed within the order: knights and sergeants, the latter being lower-class individuals who had become members. By this time the Knights Templar became quite wealthy owning much land across Europe. During that time the Knights Templar developed enemies, one of which was a competing order called the Hospitallers. King Philip IV began to not trust the Knights Templar, fearing their growing power. Some say it was because the order refused to loan any more money to the king. Accusing them of heresy and immorality and other preposterous charges like worshiping cats, homosexuality, idol worship, etc. King Philip had used same type of allegations against Pope Boniface VIII.
At dawn on Friday, 13 October 1307, King Philip IV ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templars to be simultaneously arrested. They ended up being murdered by hanging, crucifixion, or torture.
National Geographic and some historians still disagree that the fate of the Knights Templar as the reason that Friday the 13th is bad luck. Like Hallows Eve, it will probably be a tradition that will not end.
